John Pitcher
approaches his art with confidence and originality. For over
twenty-five years he has expressed his passion for the natural
world through beautifully detailed paintings. Pitcher's success
in portraying the world's natural beauty lies in his experience
as a naturalist. By keeping field journals, which contain notes
and drawings of plants and habitat, and by making field sketches
and taking reference photos he assembles the details for the
final work, experimenting with composition and calling back to
life the original inspiration behind the painting.
Raised in
Portage, Michigan, John enjoyed family camping trips and developed
a keen interest in anything wild - especially birds of prey and
snakes! Following a stint in Vietnam he launched his art career
in Alaska. Twelve years later he moved to western Washington
and a dozen years later he moved to beautiful Dorset, Vermont
where he married his artist wife Sue Westin. There they share
a studio and operate the Gallery On The Marsh.
